On September 10, 2026, amateur radio operators, developers, and emergency preparedness enthusiasts gathered in Panama City for a new in-person meetup of the Meshtastic Panama community.
The gathering provided a platform to strengthen community ties, share technical insights on 915 MHz LoRa hardware performance, discuss RF propagation across Panama’s unique topography, and align on our primary goal: deploying strategic mountaintop repeater nodes to establish an autonomous nationwide mesh network.
🏔️ Strategic Mountaintop Repeater Roadmap
To ensure reliable, off-grid coverage across Panama City, interprovincial highways, central provinces, and western highlands, four high-elevation sites were designated as top deployment priorities:
1. Cerro Jefe
🚚 HARDWARE IN TRANSITLocation: East Panama / Chagres National Park (~1,007m ASL).
Status: Álvaro has dedicated hardware on the way for installation. This site will cover Panama City, Tocumen, Chepo, and the eastern corridor.
2. Volcán Barú
🛠️ ASSEMBLY IN PROGRESSLocation: Chiriquí Highlands (~3,474m ASL).
Status: Pablo Rocchetta is finalizing and testing a high-altitude solar test node for western region and long-distance interprovincial links.
3. Cerro Campana
⏳ SEEKING HARDWARELocation: Capira / West Panama (~1,030m ASL).
Status: Critical backbone bridge connecting Panama Bay to Chame, San Carlos, Coronado, and Coclé. Currently open for equipment donations.
4. Cerro Canajagua
⏳ SEEKING HARDWARELocation: Las Tablas / Los Santos (~830m ASL).
Status: Dominant peak covering the Azuero Peninsula, Parita Gulf, Herrera, and Los Santos. Open for community sponsorship.
🤝 Community Call: Donations and Technical Equipment
Open-source community communications infrastructure thrives through mutual support and shared resources.
[!IMPORTANT] Open, Public, and 100% Free Infrastructure: All mountaintop repeaters and routers deployed are configured under open protocols and operate as a public utility for all citizens, radio amateurs, and first responders, without subscriptions or commercial gatekeeping.
If you can contribute financially or through direct equipment donations, all support makes an immediate difference:
- 📡 915 MHz Fiberglass Antennas (3 dBi to 5.8 dBi).
- 📻 LoRa Nodes (Heltec V3, LilyGO T-Echo / T-Beam, RAK Wireless RAK4631 / RAK19007).
- 🔋 Power Systems & Batteries (LiFePO4, 18650 packs with BMS, MPPT/PWM solar controllers).
- ☀️ Compact Solar Panels (10W to 30W for continuous off-grid operation).
- 📦 IP67 / IP68 Weatherproof Enclosures, cable glands, LMR-240 / LMR-400 coax cables, and SMA / N-type connectors.

🇵🇦 Disaster Resilience: Why Decentralized Mesh Matters
Panama is historically prone to tropical storms, floods, localized seismic activity, and electrical grid outages. In emergencies, commercial cellular networks quickly become congested or completely disabled. Having an independent, free, community-powered communication network is vital.
📻 Best Operational Practices for Mesh Operators
- Regular Check-Ins on
LongFast: Send periodic test messages on the primary LongFast channel (Channel 0) to verify link quality and mesh neighbor discovery. - Proper Node Role Selection: Only permanent high-elevation repeaters should use
ROUTERmode. For home or mobile stations, useCLIENT,CLIENT_MUTE, orTRACKER. - Map Registration: Register your station on our National Emergency Map so neighboring operators know what frequencies and modes are active nearby.
Thank you to everyone who joined our meetup and to all who contribute daily to building a resilient Panama!
